FAQs

Are reservations needed for your public tours?

Yes, reservations are required, unless otherwise noted.  Please call or email us to reserve your spot on a tour.

Your reservation is assured when we call, write, or otherwise contact you to confirm the same.

Please note:  At least 10 people must sign up for a public tour in order for that tour to go forward.

Please also see our Refund Policy and our Legal Notice, below, before booking your tour.

How much do tours cost?

The cost of our tours varies, depending on the type of tour offered.

Cash, major credit cards, and PayPal are accepted.

Please see our Refund Policy, below, before booking your tour.

If you are interested in a private tour, please contact Lina Viviano at lina@walkingnyctours.com for details and we will do our best to put together an economical – and fun – itinerary for you and/or your group.

Why am I finding different information about your tours on other sites or in other publications?

Please note that that the information contained on this website is the most up-to-date information regarding our tours and that it always governs the terms of our services.

Always call or otherwise contact us directly for up-to-date details of our tours.

May I combine any outstanding offers, promotions, and/or discounts offered on public or private tours?

Sorry, but no.  Only one offer, promotion, or discount (regardless of how you obtained the offer, promotion or discount), may be used by an individual, or by each member of a group, on any given public tour.

Where can I find tour descriptions and itineraries?

A description of each itinerary is contained in the Tour Descriptions page.

Please note that the sites visited on each tour often consist of a combination of the sites mentioned in the description, and may include other sites not specifically mentioned.  You may, of course, wish to return to a site on your own after the tour in order to spend more time at that particular locale.  In light of the limited duration of each tour, we are unable to enter into or spend long periods of time at many of the sites visited.

If you're a "foodie," visit our NYC Food Tour page for a culinary adventure!

Please note that we reserve the right to change our tour itineraries and to choose the combination of sites visited during any given tour.

Gotham Walking Tours also reserves the right to change the dates of its public tours.

All tours are subject to availability.

Are tours ever canceled?

Tours take place rain or shine or snow . . . . i.e., regardless of weather conditions.

Feel free, if you wish, to call our hotline at (646) 645-5782 after 8:00 a.m. on the morning of the tour.  If the tour has, in fact, been canceled, the outgoing message will inform you of the cancellation.

Kindly note: We anticipate that cancellations will be few and far between.  But please note that we reserve the right to cancel tours on account of, for example, what we regard as inclement weather, or on account of the guide's illness.

Where are the Starting Points of tours?

We depart from locations that are relatively close to New York City subway stations.  Tours often do not end at their starting point – but we're more than happy to stick around and point you in the direction of your hotel, home, or other destination at the end of the tour.

Please note that tour participants are responsible for their own transportation costs.

Please also note, with respect to any tour that involves walking over the Brooklyn Bridge, that Gotham Walking Tours reserves the right to take the subway into Brooklyn, rather than to walk over the Bridge, on days when we determine that the weather is inclement.  Accordingly, please make sure you have your own MetroCard (subway fare) handy in the event we need to take the train into Brooklyn.

How Do You Find Me?

I'm the one holding the "Gotham Walking Tours" sign (and smiling because I truly enjoy showing you the sights).  Please note that tours begin promptly at the designated time.

May children join the tours?

Children are welcome to join our tours as long as they are  accompanied by a responsible adult.

Do you make restroom stops on public tours?

We are more than happy to direct you to the nearest restroom at the end of each tour - and we do try our best to point you to the nearest restroom in case of emergencies during the tour.

Do you offer private tours?

Yes.  Please visit our
Private Tours page for details.  Most of our tours are, in fact, private tours.  We offer public tours on a limited basis.

What is your Refund Policy with respect to public and private tours?

All tours take place rain or shine or snow . . . . i.e., regardless of weather conditions.

Refunds will only be issued to individuals and/or organizations that cancel their tour(s) at least eleven days prior to the tour date, regardless of the date on which such individuals and/or organizations purchased their tickets.

Please note that individuals and/or organizations who have paid for their tour and who choose to cancel or reschedule their tour ten or fewer days in advance of the tour date will receive a credit (redeemable for one year from the date of payment) that can be applied to a future tour(s).  This provision is applicable regardless of the date upon which tickets have been purchased.

All rescheduled tours are subject to our availability.

Kindly also note that neither refunds nor credits will issued to parties who fail to appear for their scheduled tour(s).

If GWT, in its sole discretion, chooses to cancel any of its tours, refunds will be issued to each individual and/or entity which has booked the tour.

Can you tell me about the images on this website?

The skyline image that appears at the top of each page of this website is not, alas, that of New York City.  Please stay tuned as we continue to work with the website builder/software designer  (as well as the owner of the image) to install the "real deal" – for there is no substitute for the greatest skyline in the world.

Here's the proper image (which we took on a recent stroll through Brooklyn) . . . . and which appears throughout our website:

Please also note that unless otherwise indicated, all images on this website are the property of Lina Viviano and may not be used or reproduced in any manner without her written consent.

Why are New York City and/or Manhattan referred to as "Gotham"?

Contrary to popular belief, it didn't start with Batman . . . .

Washington Irving, perhaps best known for the short stories Rip van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, first made reference to Manhattan as "Gotham" in an early 19th century literary magazine, Salmagundi, which he created with his brother William, and with James Kirke Paulding:

''Oh! Gotham, Gotham! most enlightened of cities! – how does my heart swell with delight when I be-hold your sapient inhabitants lavishing their attention with such wonderful discernment!''

– Washington Irving, Salmagundi
